Agility was officially introduced in England at the Crufts Dog Show in 1979, and has since captured the hearts of dogs, and dog lovers, worldwide. As spectators and participants alike have discovered the speed, the grace and the out-and-out excitement of this sport, agility has become so popular that it is now a regular feature on television, and has grown to embrace national and international competitions. Agility is a highly competitive sport, but it is also much more. Most dogs and people can do agility. Many agility dogs do our sport simply for recreation and exercise. It can be used for physical conditioning, and therapy for injured dogs, and to build confidence and coordination. It shapes a bond between a dog and a human that is unmatched by any other training, and training is the key. Agility dogs are some of the best trained, and best conditioned, of the canines, with many being true athletes in their own right. The benefits of agility may seem to be endless, but the first and foremost reason for doing it is always the same, it is fun, and it is fun for both of you. The most fun you could possibly have with your dog.
Must I have a purebred dog in order to compete in dog agility?
No. A competitor may compete with any dog, purebred or mixed breed in Agility. Dog agility is practiced as a sporting activity that demonstrates a handler and trainer's skill in working with a dog on an obstacle course. The type of dog may pose certain challenges in training and handling, but a competitor is not restricted as to type of dog. Therefore, dog agility is frequently referred to as a "sport for all dogs".
Do I have to be in prime physical condition to do agility?
No. Anyone can participate in the sport!
Disabled or prime condition, anyone can play agility. All you need is the desire to play with your dog. As long as you are in relative good health you can compete. If you have any concerns about the physical demands of agility, please consult your doctor.
Do I have to be a certain age to compete in agility?
No. Again, anyone can participate in the sport!
Young or wise, anyone can play agility. All you need is a bond with your dog. Agility competitors have started in the sport as young as their elementary years, as well as those who have started competing well into their retirement years.
What dog is best suited for agility?
Any dog with good physical agility and energy is a strong candidate for the sport. Though many breeds appear more naturally adapted to the sport, more than 150 breeds (including mixed-breeds as a single group) have demonstrated their ability to perform well.
